The Journalism and Digital Media Department celebrates 30 years of Journalism education in 2023. We welcome Communication Sciences students to participate in a weeklong series of events with presentations in English, Romanian, Hungarian or German. The Journalism and Digital Media Department at Babeș-Bolyai University’s College of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences invites submissions for the 2023 students’ competitions.

Bachelor and Master Students in Communication Sciences and related fields from Romanian Universities may apply by May 1 2023. The selected submissions will be presented in the events which will be scheduled May 8 to May 13, as part of the FSPAC Students’ Conference. The events will take place in Cluj-Napoca, in the FSPAC buildings on Minerilor St. 85 and Traian Moșoiu St. 71.

ALL CONTRIBUTIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THIS FORM 

The events will require on-site presence of all registered student participants. All participants should fill in the attendance list for the events they are participating in. Organizers of each event will issue participation certificates (electronic/paper-based).

V for Visual festival started in 2015. The annual selection consists in short non-fictional videos produced mainly by students in media, journalism and arts of the Journalism and Digital Media Department, but it is also open to other students from UBB or other universities around the country. Visual productions may be the result of curricular or extra curricular work. Submitted videos will be subjected to a pre-selection process. The festival will be concluded by the public screening of the selected videos. A specialized jury will evaluate the above mentioned productions on the same occasion. The screening will take place according to the schedule of students’ competition (published after the end of submissions and selection). All selections from previous editions of the festival can be viewed on the Youtube channel of the V for Visual festival.

Nowadays, media outlets exploit this journalistic genre because characters’ emotions and beliefs allow the audience to take part in the story. The aim of this competition is to encourage students to explore the background and character of a particular person. The focus should be on aspects of the subject’s personal or professional life. Students are invited to submit their long-form journalism pieces, which fall under the portrait category (interview or feature). We accept submissions in Romanian and in English.

The Content++ Digital Media Competition challenges students in media, arts, journalism, communication or even computer science and engineering to come up with ground-breaking, innovative and deeply engaging digital media contents. Audio storytelling is reinventing itself in the digital age. The production of audio content has been developing and fascinating the listeners for already a century – from radio news reporting to creative narrative podcasts defined by scholars as a cultural practice of producing and consuming digital sound content. Students are invited to submit their audio / radio production produced within the last year and participate at the news features, podcasts and other innovative digital audio productions categories, that are to be judged by professionals and faculty staff. The awarding ceremony will also host a short debate on digital radio industry.

The aim of the competition is to encourage and stimulate investigative journalism among future journalists, to provide them with platform to showcase their work and as a way of recognizing their achievements. Even more so, the event provides the right framework for academic discussions and debates on issues specific to this type of journalism, such as the difficulty of investigative work, the relationship with sources, allocation/management of resources, demand vs. supply in investigative journalism, labor market integration etc., topics of increased interest for future journalists. The competition will end with a public presentation, an awards ceremony and a round table.

The photo contest featuring the year’s best student work in photojournalism  – for categories NEWS PHOTO, STREET PHOTOGRAPHY, PHOTO STORY, PHOTO PORTRAIT, NATURE and TRAVEL – will announce the winners in the presence of professional photojournalists and professors of photography. The awarding ceremony will be followed by a short debate that will explore the digital transformation in photojournalism when it comes to the production, the distribution and the consumption of photography. Students who are interested to participate in the competition are kindly asked to submit photos taken during courses or extra-curricular projects in the last year. Images sent must be at a crop size of 20 × 30 cm, a resolution of 300 DPI and a minimum of 3000 × 2000 pixels, and can be taken with a camera or with a mobile phone. Together with the photos, student’s contact details (name, surname, name of the University, email address and telephone number) and photo captions (presentation of the character and the story behind the image) are also required for registration in the competition.

Coffee and Lunch Breaks on May 16 2022 will be provided by the organizers on-location, acording to the schedule of the events (to be announced after May 10 2022). Students from Universities based in cities other than Cluj-Napoca may apply for accomodation in the Babeș-Bolyai University dorms for 1-2 nights (depending on availability) to participate in the event. Please fill in this form to apply for accomodation in Cluj-Napoca for participating in the events. Organizers will be able to confirm accomodation starting on May 9-10 2022.

Media Culture Days 2021

The Department of Journalism and Digital Media welcomes attendees and participants at the sixth edition of Media Culture Days, with a series of events held online between the 17^th and 21^st of May.

Initiated in 2016, this series of events aims to bring together students, professionals, teachers, and researchers in the fields of digital media, journalism, and communication and create a forum for exchanging ideas and facilitating professional networking and collaboration.

MEDIA VS. POWER Webinar

The Power (political or financial), and Media need each other in order to fulfill their goals. Their love-hate relationship is filled with suspicion. The Power strives to convey its own message, while Media tries to get a glimpse of what’s behind the official scenario, to reveal Power’s dirty secrets. This treacherous no man’s land, with smiles on faces and guns at the ready, is a place where corruption, influence, suspicion or betrayal become bitter reality. What is a journalist supposed to do and how should one behave in such an environment, resembling the script of a spy movie? The present webinar tries to set some guidelines, inspired by the life and experience of three investigative reporters, each with outstanding achievements, hardcore journalists who tasted Power’s bitter revenge. MEDIA AND SOCIETY: Models, Representations and Current Phenomena – Students’ Conference

The Student Conference organized by the Journalism Department at the College of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences will be celebrating its 14th edition in 2021. As in the previous years, this unique multilingual event will bring together Bachelor and Master’s students in English, Romanian, Hungarian and German language panels to present their research projects, receive feedback and discuss opportunities for further research.

Visual Animation Students’ Competition 2021

The selection includes animation projects (digital and traditional). These projects must demonstrate the level of understanding for the programs and basic principles of animation (2d, 3d, vectors, stop-motion, 3d, motion graphics, etc.) and the way the students transfer this information into final products.

FOCUS Press Photo Exhibition

The photo exhibition featuring the year’s best student work in photojournalism (news photo, photo story, photo portrait, nature and travel categories) will open to the public in the presence of professional photojournalists and professors of photography. The awarding ceremony will be followed by a debate that is exploring the changing environment of production, distribution and consumption within the industry of press photography and the complex impact that the digital new technologies have upon photojournalism.

Digital Graphics Students Competition 2021

Despite the pandemic, thanks to increasingly accessible digital technologies, we have many opportunities to relax, to try to somehow reduce the mental tensions caused by the pandemic: we can inform ourselves in real time about the world, we can communicate through digital platforms with almost anyone, at any distance. But, in addition to these possibilities, the different digital platforms provide us with another solution, which can be just as psychologically beneficial as the information or the communication, namely: CREATION.
So, starting from these premises, during the “Media Culture Days”, 2021 edition, we invite you to create, using the various digital design applications accessible to you, artistic compositions that can represent for their spectators a “dreamy refuge”, a digital-imaginary resting place, where we can enjoy our tired eyes from the constant threat of the pandemic. Please ensure that, for compatibility reasons, the works are submitted to us in JPG format.

Media Culture Days 2020

Zilele Culturii Media este un eveniment inițiat de Departamentul de Jurnalism și Media Digitală în 2016, întrunind o serie de manifestații academice și culturale, prin care își propune să reunească studenți, profesioniști, profesori și cercetători din domeniile media digitală, jurnalism și comunicare și să devină un forum pentru schimbul de idei și facilitarea colaborărilor profesionale.

Fiind dat contextul global actual, evenimentul s-a mutat în online, dar își păstrează structura și își propune să fie o platformă de promovare, atât a studenților cât și a departamentului.

Content++

În contextul unei piețe digitale globale care se schimbă cu mare viteză, genurile tradiționale evoluează și noi formate de conținut apar în fiecare an. Competiția Content++ adresează o provocare studenților din domeniile media, arte, jurnalism, comunicare sau chiar informatică și inginerie de a crea noi conținuturi digitale interactive inovative care să atragă interesul publicului în noi moduri.

Grafică digitală/Digital graphics

Selecția cuprinde proiectele de grafică digitală realizate de studenți prin care să demonstreze cunoașterea programelor și principiilor estetice de realizare a interfețelor digitale pentru producția media contemporană (afișe, pagini de ziare și reviste, coperți de carte, site, platforme etc.)

Presă scrisă/Written press

StudentPress este un site unde sunt publicate materiale de presă ale studenţilor jurnaliști din cadrul FSPAC, UBB, dar și o redacție-şcoală. Aici, colaboratorii beneficiază de feedback extins pentru fiecare articol pe care îl redactează, observaţii şi sfaturi în vederea îmbunătăţirii scriiturii lor, susţinere permanentă în vederea unei abordări cât mai profesioniste a subiectelor pe care le au în vedere.

Producție video/Video production

Producția de conținut video este emblematică pentru Departamentul de Jurnalism și Media Digitală, prin proiectele extra-curriculare dedicate, dar mai ales prin încununarea celor mai bune producții în cadrul festivalului anual V for Visual.

Producție radio/Radio production

Storytelling-ul audio se reinventează in era digitală. Producția conținutului audio s-a dezvoltat și a fascinat ascultătorii de peste un secol – de la reportaje radio la podcasturi narative creative definite de oamenii de știință ca o practică culturală de producție și consum al conținutului audio digital.

Fotografie/Photography

În cadrul cursurilor, seminariilor și atelierelor de fotojurnalism oferite de departament, studenții sunt încurajată să creezi și mai apoi să disemineze munca lor.

Activitate doctoranzi/Ph.D. students’ activity

Școala Doctorală de Științe Politice și ale Comunicării funcționează din anul universitar 2009-2010 și este a treia instituție cu acest profil din România. Deși foarte tânără, școala și-a câștigat un real prestigiu, prin originalitatea proiectelor inițiate sub egida ei: conferințe, simpozioane, mese rotunde, lansări de cărți, workshop-uri etc.

Departamentul de Jurnalism a organizat a treia ediție a Zilelor Culturii Media. Inițiată în 2016, această serie de evenimente are loc pe durata unei săptămâni și constituie un forum pentru schimbul de idei, întâlniri și colaborări între studenți, profesioniști, profesori și cercetători din media digitală, jurnalism și comunicare.
